Berlin-cinéma

Samira Gloor-Fadel, France/Switzerland, 1999, 106 min

Samira Gloor-Fadel’s Berlin-cinéma is a passionate look at the “new” Berlin of the 1990s that doubles as a chance to examine the history of film, the end of the 20th century, and the future of the moving image. Rarely before seen in North America, Berlin-cinéma takes us on a cinematic stroll through Berlin, stopping to chat with such luminaries as architect Jean Nouvel and filmmakers Wim Wenders and Jean-Luc Godard.

Performance: Ship of Fools

Performance: Ship of Fools

Since the 1980s Berliner Alexander Hacke, stalwart of the industrial scene of Einsturzende Neubauten fame, has been producing a soundtrack for our times. Ship of Fools is the work of Hacke and his partner Danielle de Picciotto: a visionary show that confronts human folly and the problems it causes. Inspired by the eponymous novel by Strasbourg humanist and poet Sebastian Brandt (1458–1521), this metaphor in eleven scenes illustrates a timeless theme through the interaction of text, images, and music.
