Visions of Chaos

Antitube programming, part of Manif d'art 5

Cataclysm? What cataclysm!

A program focusing on experimental film with images of the Bomb and other stock footage is reworked in unique and disturbing ways (Pelechian’s Notre siècle; Bruce Conner’s Television Assassination). These films extract a lesson from film history to make a statement about the cataclysms always looming in today’s packed media landscape, where high-tech warfare is an object of idolatry. Also on the program: Canadian films that rework and manipulate filmed images (Karl Lemieux, Richard Kerr, Eduardo Menz).

Our program takes viewers through four decades of film in a single evening, with reworked of stock footage by well-known and emerging filmmakers from the USA, Quebec, Canada, and Armenia.

Our Century

Our Century

Artavazd Pelechian, Armenia, 1982, 50 min., 35 mm.

A meditation on the conquest of space, rockets to nowhere, Icarus’s dream symbolized in the American and Russian empires, cosmonauts disfigured by acceleration, the impending cataclysm…. Pelechian throws a confused body into orbit and watches it spin, held aloft by his momentous subject matter. Up here, nothing is on a human scale: instead of Man in the Cosmos we have the Cosmos in Man.
